Medical Imaging

Medical Imaging is the technique and process used to create images of the human body or body parts for clinical purposes most commonly used to examine diseases or assist in determining a diagnosis.

X-ray-A form of electromagnetic radiation where a machine sends photons to pass through the body. A special film is used to record the images that are created. Most commonly used to diagnose bone fractures.

Ultrasound (US) - Involves exposing part of the body to high frequency sound waves to produce pictures inside the body. Unlike x-rays, ultrasounds do not use ionizing radiation that is used in x-rays. Basic ultrasound images can capture the structure and movement of the body’s internal organs as well as blood flowing through vessels. Ultrasound may be used for pregnant woman to determine the vitality of a fetus and surrounding structures and can also detect deep vein thrombosis.

Computed Tomography (CT)-Combines special x-ray equipment with sophisticated computers to produce multiple images or pictures of inside of the body. Cross sectional images can be made providing greater clarity and reveal more details than regular x-ray exams. CT may be used for stroke victims to detect bleeding in the brain.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) - Uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detail pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body structures. MRI does not use ionizing radiation used in x-rays. MRI may be used to detect a ligament tears, rotator cuff injuries, and much smaller, more defined abnormalities not easily detected with CT.
